World Cup Fever Comes to Puerto Morelos
There are some things you don’t have to explain in Mexico. Food, family, music, a reason to celebrate — and fútbol.
With the 2026 World Cup now underway, that familiar energy is everywhere again. Mexico opened the tournament with a 2–0 win over South Africa in Mexico City, and for many people here, that was more than just a game. It was a reason to gather, cheer, sing, dance, and remember why fútbol means so much in this country.
World Cup and Team Spirit at Abbey del Sol
At Abbey del Sol, we had our own little version of that World Cup spirit. Some of our staff watched the opening game together, and like everywhere in Mexico, the mood was happy and full of life.

That is one of the fun parts of being here during a World Cup. Even if you are not a big soccer fan, you can feel when something important is happening.
Why Fútbol Feels Different in Mexico
For visitors from the United States, the difference can be interesting. Soccer has grown a lot in the U.S., especially with younger fans, but in Mexico and much of the rest of the world, fútbol is something deeper. It is woven into daily life.

Children play it in the streets. Families plan meals around big games.
Restaurants, beach bars, and town squares fill with people wearing team shirts and watching every pass as if they were in the stadium.
World Cup Days in Puerto Morelos
Puerto Morelos may be a small beach town, but during the World Cup you will find plenty of places showing the games. Ask our staff where to watch, and we will be happy to point you toward a local spot. Some guests may prefer a beach bar, others may want a casual restaurant, and some may simply want to watch from the comfort of their vacation rental.

Whether Mexico wins, loses, or makes everyone nervous until the last minute, one thing is certain: there will be singing, cheering, laughter, and probably a little dancing too.
That is part of the joy of visiting Puerto Morelos during World Cup season. You get the Caribbean, the relaxed pace of a small fishing town, the comfort of Abbey del Sol, and a front-row seat to one of the world’s great sporting celebrations.
