Exploring the Newly Opened Maya Ruins at Xcaret

An Abbey del Sol Day Trip Recommendation

If you’re staying with us in Puerto Morelos and looking for a unique mix of history, culture, and the natural beauty of the Riviera Maya, consider a day trip to Xcaret.

Visitors stand atop a restored stone structure surrounded by dense jungle at Xcaret.

While most visitors know Xcaret for its shows, wildlife, and underground rivers, Xcaret also sits on the site of an ancient Maya port city called Polé—and recently, new archaeological areas have been opened to the public.

Restored Glimpses of the Ancient Maya World

Thanks to recent work by Mexico’s National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH), visitors can now explore restored temples, watchtowers, and even a section of the sacbé, the Maya ceremonial road.

Some original stonework remains, but much has been reconstructed using traditional techniques to help you picture what the city once looked like.

Ancient Treasures Between the Attractions

As you wander, you’ll find these archaeological gems tucked between Xcaret’s other attractions.

If you’re a history enthusiast, keep your eyes open for details like the colonial-era chapel, where Maya and Catholic traditions blended in unexpected ways.

It’s a beautiful and fascinating walk, even if it sometimes blends the line between authentic ruins and carefully rebuilt history.

Insider Tip: See the Ruins Without the Full Park Price

Xcaret’s full-day ticket starts at about 2,400 pesos, but there’s a budget-friendly secret:
An INAH booth (Mexico’s National Institute of Anthropology and History) in the Xcaret parking lot sometimes offers guided archaeological tours for just 100 pesos. It’s not always staffed, and they may only speak Spanish – so calling ahead is a good idea.

If you speak Spanish, you can call directly at +52 983-837-0796 ext. 318002.
If you don’t speak Spanish-no worries, our front desk staff can call ahead and arrange an english speaking guide for you as well as arrange transportation.
