Puerto Morelos Breaks Ground on Its First Animal Welfare Center

On August 26, 2026, the Municipality of Puerto Morelos marked the beginning of construction of its first Centro de Bienestar Animal, or Animal Welfare Center. The project is intended to provide a more organized and humane response for dogs and cats experiencing abandonment, mistreatment or vulnerability.

What Is Planned

According to the official municipal announcement, the center will be developed in two stages on municipally owned land.

The first stage represents an investment of 6 million pesos and is planned as a one-level, 277-square-meter facility. The municipality says it will include preventive-medicine consultation rooms, an operating room, postoperative recovery space and areas for sterilization and vaccination campaigns. Plans also call for temporary shelter, reception and administrative areas, and outdoor space for exercise, training and preparation for responsible adoption.
