More Than a Vacation Town: How Puerto Morelos Cares for Its Elders
Visitors often meet Puerto Morelos through its beach, reef, restaurants and relaxed atmosphere. Those are important parts of the town, but they are not the whole community.
Casa del Adulto Mayor “Nohoch Uinic” -Where Experience Still Has a Place
On the colonia side, in Zetina Gasca, the Casa del Adulto Mayor “Nohoch Uinic” tells another part of the story. It is a place created for older residents to spend time together, remain active, learn, create and be recognized for the experience they carry.
That matters because a good community cannot measure its progress only in new buildings, visitor numbers or money earned. It must also ask whether the people who built that community still have a place within it.
Nohoch Uinic operates through the DIF Puerto Morelos and provides a regular gathering place for the municipality’s older adults.
Activities include dance, zumba, crafts, hammock weaving and programs supporting health and wellbeing. In 2025, the municipality reported that more than 200 older residents benefited from the space and that many attended regularly.
The individual activities are valuable, but the larger purpose may be even more important. A place like this offers company, routine, movement and the chance to keep contributing. It recognizes that growing older should not mean becoming invisible.
Nohoch Uinic is not a visitor attraction, and it should not be treated as one. Its importance to travelers lies in what it reveals about Puerto Morelos.
Looking Beyond Tourism and Development
Tourism creates work and opportunity. Development can improve a town when it is thoughtful and serves the people who live there. But neither one, by itself, creates a strong community.
Community is also found in everyday choices: making room for children and elders, preserving places where neighbors meet, supporting those who need extra care and remembering the people whose work and knowledge shaped the town.
The Same Human Scale
The care Puerto Morelos shows its older residents and the welcome it offers visitors are not the same thing, and they should not be confused. But they can grow from the same qualities: patience, attentiveness, familiarity and the belief that people should not be treated as numbers.
