Chichén Itzá and the Magic of the Equinox: A Timeless Maya Wonder

Every spring and fall, something incredible happens deep in the Yucatán jungle. As the sun crosses the celestial equator, thousands gather at the ancient city of Chichén Itzá to witness a moment of pure architectural and astronomical genius.

At just the right time in the afternoon, shadows cast by the sun form the image of a serpent slithering down the northern staircase of El Castillo—Kukulkán’s pyramid. The light hits the nine platforms, creating a sequence of triangles that line up perfectly with the carved serpent heads at the base.

Over 1,000 years ago, the Maya designed this structure with an understanding of solar movement so precise, modern experts are still trying to wrap their heads around it. No computers. No satellites. Just the stars, stone, and minds deeply in tune with the rhythms of Mother Nature.

That’s why Abbey del Sol was proud to co-sponsor a previous trip for Maya children from remote jungle communities—organized by Michael A. Maurus and the Maya Hinterland Project.
Part of the project’s educational program, the trip aimed to bring Maya kids closer to the history and brilliance of their ancestors. For many, it was their first time experiencing this sacred site in person. Their smiles say it all.
