A Botanical Garden with a Bigger Story

The Jardín Botánico Dr. Alfredo Barrera Marín is more than a peaceful place for a walk. Located within the protected Manglares de Puerto Morelos area, it supports conservation, research, and environmental education.

According to CONANP, the Manglares de Puerto Morelos protected area shelters 1,294 native species of plants, animals, and fungi. That is a remarkable amount of life beside a town many visitors first know for its beach.

Learning Begins Young

The Ayuntamiento de Puerto Morelos recently shared a visit by the Cabildo Infantil to the botanical garden in recognition of the International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem.

During the visit, CONANP staff taught the children about local biodiversity and the role mangroves play in protecting the coast.
