WELCOME TO ABBEY DEL SOL
Abbey Del Sol is Puerto Morelos Mexico's destination for peace and tranquility! We offer lovely vacation rental houses, apartments, and hotel rooms that can be your home away from home. Come enjoy beautiful beaches, charming accommodations, and the relaxed small town atmosphere of Puerto Morelos.
HOW IT ALL STARTED:
Guests often ask us “How did you get started with this business?” Tiff and I ask ourselves the same thing: how did this happen? If you asked either of us ten years ago, “What do you see yourself doing ten years from now?” running a vacation rental business in Mexico wouldn’t have been on the list. In fact, Mexico wasn’t on our list of vacation destinations and we’d never heard of Puerto Morelos before.
In the winter of 2003 a good friend of ours suggested we rent their vacation home in Mexico. “Where in Mexico?”, Abby asked. “Oh, south of Cancun.” Abby’s answer was the same as many of our guests, “Cancun? Can’t stand Cancun.” “Oh no,” our friend said, ”Puerto Morelos isn’t like Cancun at all. You’ve got to try it.” So we did.
It is amazing where a simple “yes” can lead you. We arrived in Puerto Morelos and fell in love with the quaint little town. Five days into the vacation, Tiff was out looking for a retirement home to buy. We’ve heard this story from many others. The town captures your heart in a way that makes it feel like home right away. We bought Abbey del Sol One (the house had no name then) on the last day of our vacation with only the idea of having a second home and a comfy place to retire. Watch out where that fork in the road can lead you!
For the first two years we rolled along happily renting our two upstairs apartments to friends and family. Abby, being Abby, started remodeling and redecorating. Tiff and Jin got the idea to add an apartment above Jin’s house. Four years down the road we find our three apartments are full all the time and two of the property owners in town that Jin did side jobs for asked us if we would consider managing their properties. Casa Ricardo and Casa Anita were added to the team. We hired Jin’s younger brother Freddy as our assistant manager (we are big believers in family run businesses.) And those properties were getting full too.
In 2007 the owners of a boutique hotel just down the street, Suites 918, came to us to see if we would manage their property. We said no. But Tiff, being the visionary he is, said, “We’ll buy it.” The boutique hotel concept had been a huge disaster so Abby and Jin came in to “Abbeyize” the property and thus was born Abbey del Sol Two.
And how about that retirement plan? Well Tiff retired in January 2010 and now works full time as our receptionist, Tour director and all around Great Guy On Campus. That fork in the road has lead us to the most enjoyable “retirement” (read “full time job”) you could ever ask for and we love sharing it with all our new friends that come our way.
HOW DID ABBEY DEL SOL GET ITS NAME?
A good friend of ours suggested it as a play on Abby’s name, “The Abbey of the Sun” since we wanted people to have a warm, safe feeling when they stayed with us.
